It contains a reference to the lease by the bishop of Genoa of vineyards and chestnut groves in the Meirana area to two citizens of Gavi. Receipts have been discovered dating from 1373 which refer to wine from the estates of the castles of Parodi and Tagliolo being destined for the Genoese market. This suggests that wine from Lower Piedmont already had a far from negligible market in the mediaeval period. The first specific reference to the Cortese vine is found in the letters written by the factor of Montaldeo castle to the Marchese Doria in 1659 and 1688, in which he speaks of "vines that are all Cortese, some fermenting vats, and sweet nebbiolos (a black grape variety)". Later, in 1799, Count Nuvolone mentions Cortese in the dialect form corteis. In 1876 the Marchese Cambiaso, proprietor of the Centuriona and Toledana estates, created the first large-scale specialised plantings of Cortese, and his example was shortly followed by the Raggio, Serra, Sartorio and Spinola families. This was the beginning of the modern era for Gavi, which boasts its first appearance in a treatise on viticulture in 1870, when Demaria and Leardi gave an accurate description of Cortese. They described it, among other things, as being particularly suited to making sparkling wines, thanks especially to the work of the French oenologist Luigi Oudard (keeper of the Conte di Cavour's cellars at Grinzane), who was the first to use Cortese for his sparkling wines. Several decades have gone by. In this period vine growing in this area has developed, acquiring a significant national and international status. This growth has coincided in many cases with a generation change - farmers born in the first half of the century (for whom wine was only one of the products contributing to the income of the family enterprise) handed over to their children, who have been able to transform their fathers’ activity into fully-equipped modern and structured vine-growing and wine-making firms, exploiting the precious expertise and wine making tradition of the area, passed down from one generation to the next. The training, information, technical support and promotion activities carried out by the Consortium have been crucial in this development phase, together with official monitoring and DOC certification. Today the Consortium has about 200 members, over ¾ of which are bottlers. Their vineyards (2,300 registered hectares) produce over 80,000 hectolitres of DOC wine, almost 30% of which is exported, mainly to European countries but also U.S.A. and Japan. Germany and Austria are still important markets where the Consortium organizes presentations and wine-tasting events - much appreciated by participating members and the public. The Consortium's producers account for about 85% of the entire output of DOC Lambrusco in the province of Modena. To guarantee its quality, each year the Consortium for the Historic Mark of Modenese Lambrusco checks 15 million bottles of DOC Lambrusco wines, which undergo severe tests. A special technical committee performs organoleptic tests on anonymous samples drawn from producers, subsequent to their having undergone a range of chemical analyses. The evaluation is carried out using a points system which indicates whether or not the wine is of a standard to bear the Consortium's label or mark of approval. In later years it was modified in "Consortium in warranty of Frascati trade name". It's been one of the first associations to receive the task of controlling the trade name. The brand of the Consortium is an eagle with open wings and her claws hold a sign on which is written TVSCVLUM, placed on a shell with spirals and crowned with a noble crown which contains elements of the coat of arms of the town of Frascati (crossed keys), Grottaferrata (wrought iron gate), and Monte Porzio Catone (pine tree with crossed screws). From the 18 producers that set up the partnership now the Consortium has more than 600 associated producers which represent more than the 40% of the Frascati wine production.
