Five Generations Strong

The Giachino Family Keeps Vinvino An Intimate & Vibrant Competitor in the Wine Industry
If Giuseppe Giachino had been able to glimpse a century into the future to see how the fruits of his labor continued to flourish, he would’ve raised his glass and exclaimed "Bravissimo!" An immigrant from northern Italy, Giuseppe made his way in 1902 to New York City and started the family's wine business right here on MacDougal Street, naming it Piedmont Wine Cellars. Giuseppe's son Ferdinando joined him in this venture and in 1910 took over the cellar for his father.
A decade passed but 1920 brought the onset of Prohibition and Ferdinando was forced out of the wine business. Thus began a new venture into real estate. The fall of 1933 brought about the repeal of Prohibition and signaled a rebirth of the wine industry. Ferdinando started up the wine company once again and opened up Vinvino Winery, the 23rd bonded winery in NYC at 473 West Broadway. He invited his son Remo (a recent violin graduate from the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Turin, Italy) to join him in the business and although times were hard, the entire family helped Vinvino to produce and sell fine wines, vermouths, and champagnes.
In 1955, Ferdinando retired and turned the company over to his son Remo, making the third generation. It was at this time the company changed its name to Vinvino Wine Company and shifted focus from production to the importing and distribution of wines. During this time Vinvino was one of many small distributors known as "wine jobbers" all of whom essentially were the pioneers of the Italian wine industry in New York. Slowly over time, most of these “jobbers” were taken over or closed their doors, but Vinvino Wine Company remained steadfast.
In 1979, Remo's youngest son, Douglas, joined the company and with his father's guidance, he learned every aspect of the wine business. In 1995, Remo retired and Douglas, now the fourth generation, took over where he continued to develop a niche business in the New York Italian wine market. By combining several of the best names in Italian wines along with a carefully selected portfolio of exclusive wines, Vinvino outgrew its modest home of 64 years. In 1997 the company relocated to King Street. It was here in 2003 that Douglas's nephew Gus, a recent graduate of UCLA, joined the company becoming the fifth generation Giachino at Vinvino.
The summer of 2007 brought changes once again, taking Vinvino to its current boutique midtown location. Now in new offices Douglas, with Gus overseeing sales, along with an excellent staff are able to provide Vinvino customers with a level of service unparalleled in the industry.
